Billionaire George Soros Makes a Major Comeback in the Political Giving Arena

Billionaire and renowned philanthropist, George Soros, has a reputation that continuously attracts a lot of media and public attention. He maintains a high rank when it comes to his massive political giving. In fact, in 2004, Soros spent a whopping $27 million in an attempt to bar President George W. Bush from his presidential reelection bid. The reelection of President Bush caused Soros to dial down his political giving. However, this situation changed last year during the 2016 US general elections after he reemerged as one of the top funders of Democratic politics.

Records from the Federal Election Commission cited that Soros committed over $25 million to support both Hillary Clinton and other Democratic candidate hopefuls. As if that was not enough, Soros’ close associates expected more spending on political donations before the Election Day. Additionally, they noted that George Soros appeared to be more politically motivated and engaged than in previous years. They attributed this new energy to the combination of his fear for Donald Trump and faith in Democratic rival, Hillary Clinton.

Aside from funding political causes, George Soros has created a name for himself due to his massive support for various movements and organizations. The Ferguson protest movement placed Soros in the limelight after he donated at least $33miliion to the movement in a single year. The money was meant to back the already-established groups, which supported the Ferguson-based grassroots, on-the- ground activists.

Over the years, George Soros has encouraged the Ferguson protest movement not only through funding but also through mobilizing groups all over the United States. This information was sourced from interviews with various key players and financial records obtained and analyzed by The Washington Times.
